The propane heater ticks in the corner of the fire hall and somebody's boots are wet on the concrete, and the chairman says his name.
Twenty folding chairs, maybe twenty two. The truck bay doors are shut and the smell is diesel and coffee. Up front there is a card table with a legal pad on it and a rolled plan of the creek crossing that has been unrolled and weighted at the corners with two coffee mugs and a stapler. The argument has been going forty minutes and it has gone in a circle twice: raise the road, or move the crossing. Nobody in the room has been down that creek in high water except him.
He has been down it in high water. Eighteen springs. He knows where the flow leaves the channel, on the outside of the bend by the willow stump, and he knows why the last culvert went, and he could stand up and say it in ninety seconds and the room would have what it needs.
The chairman looks straight at him. Asks him by name. What do you think.
And he hears himself say: I've got no view either way.
That is what comes out. Not a hedge, not a maybe. A flat denial of the thing in his chest. He says it the way you would say the time. And the chairman nods and moves on and somebody else starts in on the culvert paperwork, and the meeting closes at nine, and the chairs get stacked, and he carries four of them because he is the kind of man who carries chairs.
Out in the lot the cold takes the coffee steam off the top of his cup. He sits in the truck with the key in his hand and does not turn it, and the whole answer is still sitting in him, complete, in order, with the willow stump in it, and there is nowhere for it to go now. He will lie awake with it. He has lain awake with it before.
And the thing that put those words in his mouth was not a thought and it was not a decision. It arrived ahead of both. Something in him moved before he did, the way a hand moves off a hot pan, and what it said was: take no room.
You are the one in the truck in the lot. I am not going to guess where that voice came from and I am not going to tell you whose it sounds like, because I do not know and it is not mine to say and I was not there for any of it. What I have come to tell you is what it is: it is an order. It has been giving you orders for a long time. And it is countermanded.
An order that was overruled before you heard it
Let me name the weight first, because it is heavier than anybody at that meeting knows, and it has never once been said back to you.
It is not shyness. Shyness is nerves and nerves pass. This is a command, and it arrives before the thought does, and it is obeyed at the speed of a reflex, and it always says the same one thing. Take no room. Do not put your voice where somebody would have to make space for it. And the cost of obeying it is not embarrassment. The cost is a room full of neighbors who needed a thing you had, going home without it, and a man in a truck in a cold lot who now believes something about himself that he would never say to another living soul: that what he knows costs more air than it is worth.
Now hear who speaks about this, and it is not the chairman and it is not me. Jeremiah 1 records God interrupting a man in the middle of the exact sentence he used to make himself small, and the Holy Spirit is the one bringing that interruption into a truck in a fire hall parking lot. You were sent, and the sending was never conditional on your being the sort of man who speaks up.
But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am only a youth'; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and whatever I command you, you shall speak."Jeremiah 1:7
Look at what God actually addresses there. Not the fear. Not the youth. The sentence. Do not say it. Jeremiah had a line he used on himself, and God did not argue with the line and did not talk him out of it and did not tell him he was better than he thought. God overruled the line, the way a higher authority overrules a standing order, and then told him where he was going.
That is what has happened to the order in you. It is written in Jeremiah 1 and it is not addressed to prophets only, because the God who countermands is the same yesterday and today, and the Spirit who inspired that page is the one reading it into a cold lot at nine at night. You have a standing order that has been overruled from higher up, and it has been overruled for longer than it has been running you.
Room is given, not taken
Here is the lie folded inside that order, and I want to name it so it can be evicted rather than managed. The lie says that speaking is taking. That a room has a fixed amount of air in it, that every sentence you say is a sentence somebody else does not get to say, and that a decent man makes himself small so there is enough to go around.
That is not how a room works and it is not how God works. He does not ration. When He sends a man into a room with an answer in him, the answer is not a thing the man is taking from the others. It is the thing he was sent to hand them. The willow stump on the outside of the bend is not your opinion. It is eighteen springs of knowledge that God let you have, and the room He put you in tonight is the room it was for.
His word does not carry a footnote for quiet men, and His Spirit is not running a second policy behind it. This is yours: a mouth God said He would fill, and a place He sent you to stand in.
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.2 Timothy 1:7
Read what is in that list, because the order in you has been claiming to be one of them. It calls itself self-control. It calls itself humility, and modesty, and knowing your place, and not being the sort of man who likes the sound of his own voice. But self-control puts a hand on the wheel; it does not take the wheel away. What has been happening to you is not restraint. It is dictation. And God says plainly what He gave and did not give, and the thing that hands a man a script before he can think is not on His list.
That is not my read of your character, and I am not qualified to have one. It is written in 2 Timothy 1, and the Spirit who gave those words is the one who tells a man which voice in the room is his own. You are free to speak in the name of a God who does not ration the air.
Something plain before we go on, and I would rather say it and not be needed. If the silence has stopped being about meetings, if the nights in the truck have gone somewhere dark and you are carrying weight your own hands cannot hold, tell one human being today, and if you are in any danger reach the crisis line where you live and stay on it until a real voice is with you. A man who reaches for help has not lost anything. He has used what he was given.
You do not have to become a different kind of man. That is the turn, and it is not the one you were braced for.
The voice has told you that speaking would mean becoming loud, and that becoming loud would mean becoming somebody you do not respect. It has offered you two doors and both of them are wrong. The third one is that the answer already in your chest, said in your own flat voice, in ninety seconds, with the willow stump in it, is the entire thing God is asking for. It is already settled, and it was settled in Jeremiah 1 where God overruled a man's own sentence about himself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does not need you louder, only unmuzzled.
Whether the next room gets the willow stump or not is between you and Him, and He is patient with a man who has obeyed a standing order for a long time. But whose order it is, and whether it still stands, is not in question. It has been overruled from the highest place there is.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the truck or wherever this finds you. Say them the way an ambassador speaks, because the standing to say them is yours: you represent the King who countermanded the order, and it never rested on your temperament. Every line stands on Scripture and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it, so a flat voice with wet boots is enough voice. Jesus told ordinary people to speak to a mountain, and the mountain here is not the meeting. It is an order that has been running a good man's mouth without a signature on it. What God does with that order, and how the next room goes, is His to decide and I put no clock on Him, because the outcome is His and the speaking is mine.
- Folding chair at the back of the hall, you are not a hiding place, and the answer in my chest is walking out of here with me. It is written in Jeremiah 1 that God sends a man to all He sends him to, and eighteen springs of knowing where the water goes was never mine to sit on.
- Verdict that what I know costs more air than it is worth, you have no right to stay in my mouth. Scripture says God gave a spirit of power and love and self-control and did not give the one that hands me a script, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells me which voice in this truck is mine.
- Lord, You interrupted the sentence before I could finish it and You sent me anyway, and Your word says You put Your own words in a mouth. In the name of Jesus I am done obeying an order You overruled, and the next true thing I know is coming out of me in my own flat voice.
