Brave In FreedomPsalm 46:10

Being Still Is Not Being Shelved

This message is for the man who stepped back from a post that needed him at every hour and now finds a quiet Sunday unbearable, who needs courage for a freedom in which he is not measured by being wanted somewhere

Twenty to ten on a Sunday morning, and Dell is standing in the middle of his own kitchen.

Not doing anything. Standing. He has noticed lately that he does this, that he arrives in the middle of a room and stops there like a man who has come in to get something and forgotten what. The coffee is made. The yard is mowed. His wife has gone on ahead with her sister. Nothing is wrong with the house, nothing is wrong with the day, and the whole of Sunday is laid out in front of him like a field with no fence and no crop in it.

On the counter, the phone is quiet.

For twenty-two years Dell was the man with the keys. Volunteer fire, first on the tones, the one the dispatcher's voice said the name of at any hour of the day or night. Kitchen fires, a barn, a hay baler that took a man's arm, two bad wrecks out on the county road in one winter, a hundred calls that turned out to be nothing and every one of them worth going for. He kept his boots in the truck. He kept his phone charged the way other men keep a wallet. In twenty-two years there was never a single hour of a single day when he did not know exactly what he was for.

He handed the pager back in the spring. Nobody made him. His knees were done and the young ones are good, better than he was at that age, and he had the sense to go while going was still his idea. He is proud of that. He would do it again.

And now it is twenty to ten on a Sunday and he is standing in the middle of the kitchen not doing anything.

Here is the part he has not said out loud to a living soul. Last Tuesday a siren went past out on the highway, and something in his chest came up off the floor like a dog hearing a truck in the drive, and for about a second and a half he was alive in a way he has not been since March. And then he stood there in his own kitchen and was ashamed of himself, because that lift meant somebody was having the worst morning of their life, and what kind of man is glad of a sound like that.

He is not glad of the sound. He is glad of being needed. He knows the difference and it does not help.

Now. I do not know what your pager was and I am not going to guess. I have not been in your house. Maybe you handed something back, or something was handed back for you, or the children grew and the phone stopped ringing at that particular volume, and the strange thing is that you would not go back even if they asked, and you are still standing in the middle of the room.

And there is one thing I want to say before anything else, so hear it plainly: missing it is not a betrayal. Wanting the old shape of your days back is not a spiritual failure and it does not mean you are ungrateful for what you have. The old life had you needed at every hour, and a man does not put down twenty-two years of that on a Tuesday and feel nothing on the Sunday. You are allowed to miss it. Nobody in this message is going to tell you off.

What I have come to say is something else. What you are feeling is not the quiet. It is the fear underneath the quiet, and the fear has a sentence, and the sentence is: I have been shelved.

Stood down is not the same word as set aside

Let me put you in the room where that verse gets said, because everybody quotes it off a coffee mug and almost nobody reads the two lines above it.

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.Psalm 46:10

That is not spoken over a man with a free Sunday. Psalm 46 opens with the earth being removed and the mountains carried into the middle of the sea, and it goes on through nations raging and kingdoms moved, and then, a verse before the famous one, God makes wars stop to the end of the earth: He breaks the bow, He cuts the spear in two, He burns the chariot in the fire.

And then, standing in a field full of broken weapons, He says: be still.

Read the order and put your weight on it. Psalm 46 has the bow broken and the chariot burning before that command is given at all, and the Spirit who put those verses in that sequence is the one saying it into your kitchen at twenty to ten: you were stood down by the God who ended the fighting, and a man whose weapons have been taken out of his hands by higher command has not been shelved, he has been relieved.

There is a world of difference between those two words and your whole Sunday is sitting in the gap between them. Shelved means somebody looked at you and decided you were no longer worth the trouble. Stood down means the one in command has said the thing you were holding is His now, and you may put your hands down. The first is a verdict on a man. The second is an order to one.

Nobody was ever measuring you by who was calling

Here is the sentence underneath the sentence, and I would rather name it than let you carry it around unnamed for another year.

It is not that you miss the fires. You do not miss the fires. It is that for twenty-two years there was a machine outside of you that reported, several times a week, in a voice over a radio, that you were needed. You never had to ask the question because the answer kept arriving. And when the machine was switched off, the question arrived instead, and it has been sitting in the middle of your kitchen on Sunday mornings ever since: if nobody is calling, what exactly am I.

There is no clause anywhere in His word about men who have handed the keys back, and His Spirit is not quietly reclassifying you into a lower category while you make coffee. This is yours, standing in that kitchen with the phone silent: your worth was never being calculated from the call volume, and it was not being calculated from it in the twenty-two years either.

And hold this up against what Jesus actually did with tired men. It is written in Mark 6 that when the apostles came back from a hard stretch, with people coming and going so thickly that they had not even had time to eat, He did not commend them and send them out again. He took them off the roster on purpose. Come away by yourselves to a quiet place, He said, and rest a while. The same Spirit who had that recorded for us is in the room with you: you have been called aside by the same hand that called you out, and being taken aside by Him has never once meant being finished with.

And if the quiet has gone somewhere heavier than boredom, if the standing in the middle of rooms has started to come with thoughts about whether you are needed on this earth at all, then tell one human being today, out loud, and if there is any danger in it reach the crisis line where you live and stay on with a real voice. That is not weakness in a man who ran toward things for twenty-two years. It is the same courage, turned around.

The breakthrough

Something is meant to happen here, and it is not that you get busy again. If busy were the answer you would have solved this in April, because there are nine committees in your town that would take you tomorrow, and the reason you have not said yes to any of them is that you already know it would be a bandage.

Take the second half of the verse as seriously as you take the first. Be still is not the end of the sentence. It is written, be still and know that I am God, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a command into an invitation: you have been given a morning with nothing in it so that there is finally room for the knowing, and that knowing is the work now, not a consolation prize for a man who used to have work.

Twenty-two years of being needed at every hour is not a thing to be ashamed of and it is not a thing to be undone. It was good and it saved lives and God was in the middle of it. But you cannot know a man well while you are both running, and there is a reason the quiet feels dangerous: it is the first room in twenty-two years where nothing is on fire, and the only face in it is His.

Courage, here, does not look like courage. It looks like a man staying in an empty kitchen without filling it up.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the kitchen, or at the end of the road with your hands in your pockets. Say them the way a man repeats an order he has been given rather than the way a man talks himself up, because the standing to say them is yours: it belongs to you in Christ and it never depended on what was on your belt. Every line stands on Scripture and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it, so an ordinary Sunday voice will do. What He fills these mornings with, and how long it takes a man to stop listening for the tones, is His to work out in His own way, and I am putting no clock on Him. But whether you were shelved is not in question, and you may say so today.

  1. Quiet Sunday morning with nothing on it, you are not an empty roster, and I am standing in you as a man who was stood down and not set aside. It is written that God breaks the bow and burns the chariot and only then says be still, and the stillness comes after the war rather than instead of a man.
  2. Thought that I was only ever what I carried, hear me: you are not God's estimate of me, and in the name of Jesus you do not get another Sunday of mine. Psalm 46 has Him telling a whole raging earth to be still and then saying know that I am God, and the knowing is the work now.
  3. Lord, You lifted the pack off my back Yourself and You did not do it to be rid of me, and I am walking the last half mile beside You. Your word says be still and know, and Your Spirit is the one turning an empty morning into the first real conversation in twenty-two years.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
