The bell over the door goes and she is inside, and the shop smells the way it always has, of new cotton and the oil on the big scissors, and the bolts are stacked to the ceiling behind the counter in the order the woman who runs it likes them, cream to red, red to green, green to the blues. There is a queue of two. A man is having curtain lining measured off with a tape and a lot of nodding. A girl with a pattern envelope is asking about a zip.
She knows which one it is without looking. Third shelf, halfway along: a deep clean blue with a very slight sheen, the color of the sea in one particular light. She has stood in front of it, on and off, for the best part of four years, and bought gray. Gray wears well. Gray does not draw the eye. She has a wardrobe of it.
Today she asks for the bolt, and the woman brings it down and lays it flat on the counter with a soft thump, and it is more beautiful up close than it was on the shelf, and she puts her hand on it. And that is when the voice starts. It does not shout. It never has. It says, in the tone it always uses, not for you. It says who do you think you are. It says plain is fine, plain is sensible, you will only feel foolish in it, put it back. And her hand, which is on the cloth, begins to lift off it, because that is what her hand does when the voice speaks, and it has done it for a very long time.
The woman behind the counter has the scissors in her hand and the tape laid along the selvedge. "How much, love?" she says.
You know that voice. You could not draw its face, perhaps, and I am not going to ask you to. But it gives you orders in a tone you would recognize anywhere, and it does not need to raise itself, and the thing that frightens you is not the voice. It is that your hand still lifts off the cloth.
Whose voice it is not
I am not going to tell you whose voice it is, and I am not going to guess. Some of you know exactly, and some of you honestly do not, and I would be lying if I said the page could tell the difference. It cannot, and it does not need to. What matters at the counter is not where the voice came from. It is whether it has any authority, and that is a question with an answer.
Here is the pit first, because I know it from the inside. A person who has been taking orders from that voice for years does not experience it as being ordered about. They experience it as being sensible. Not for you sounds like wisdom. Do not draw attention sounds like humility. Put it back sounds like the grown-up choice. So the obedience does not feel like obedience; it feels like being the kind of person one simply is. And underneath, quiet, is the sentence: if I stopped listening to it, I would not know who to be. That is the weight, and it is not weakness. It is what a mind does when it has been given orders for long enough. It starts to hear them as itself.
Jesus said something about voices that I want to lay flat on the counter beside the blue.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.John 10:27
And a few verses before it, He said the sheep follow the shepherd because they know his voice, and a stranger they will not follow; they run from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers (John 10:4, 5). Notice what He does not say. He does not say the sheep argue with the stranger, or work out where the stranger came from, or prove the stranger wrong. They simply do not know that voice as the one they answer to, and so they do not follow it. It has no standing with them. It can shout across the whole field and the sheep are already walking the other way behind a voice they know.
You are His sheep, and you know His voice, right now, at the counter. That is written; it is His own description of you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes His voice recognizable inside you, the way a lamb picks its own mother's call out of a hundred. The old voice is not that voice. It may be loud and it may be old, and neither of those things is standing. It is a voice you happen to be able to hear, and being audible was never the same as being in charge.
Paul puts the legal side of it in one line: you were bought with a price; do not become servants of men (1 Corinthians 7:23). Bought. There is a deed to your life and it has one name on it, and the voice at the counter is not on the deed. It cannot be. Paul says elsewhere that God has taken us out of one jurisdiction altogether and moved us into the kingdom of His beloved Son (Colossians 1:13). Moved. Not visiting. When a person moves country, the old country's officials can still send letters, and some of them still arrive, and they can be read in the old accent perfectly well, and not one of them has any authority at the new address.
You have been moved, and the old jurisdiction cannot issue you a single order that binds. Scripture says so, and the Spirit of the Son is the one who lives at your new address and answers the door. So when the voice says not for you, it is a letter from a country you no longer live in. You can read it. You do not have to do anything it says.
Now, I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this that hands you a fight, and I am not doing that. I am not telling you to argue with the voice, or shout it down, or trace it to its owner, or go and say anything to anybody. None of that is in scope, and some of it would be unwise. Sheep do not debate the stranger. They walk on behind the Shepherd. The whole of what is asked of you is smaller than a fight. It is to know which voice you answer, and to say so, and then to do the ordinary thing the other voice forbade, once, today, with your own hand.
And you were never at fault for the hand lifting off the cloth. I need to say that plainly, because a site about an open door can start to sound like a site about people who should have walked out sooner. Scripture says the freedom was settled by Christ and not by your resolve, and the Spirit who says come is not standing over you saying why has this taken so long. A reflex is not a rebellion. It is a hand that learned something. Hands can learn other things, and the learning is His work in you, and it is happening now.
And one line that is not about cloth. If the voice has begun saying things about whether you should be here at all, that is not a voice to walk quietly past; please tell one human being today, and if there is any danger reach the crisis line where you live; in the United States that is a call or a text to 988. The Shepherd is not offended when you let another person hear what the stranger has been saying. He sends people, and He does it on purpose.
So here is what is happening now, at whatever counter you are standing. The voice has started, because reading about it does that, and it is saying what it always says in the tone it always uses. And this time I am not going to let your hand lift off the cloth before you have heard the other voice.
You belong to God, and He is the one you answer, and that is a settled fact and not a step you are about to take. I am not speaking my own opinion of you; I am speaking what is written in John 10 and in 1 Corinthians 7, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it into you while you read, so that His voice is the one you recognize at the counter. The other voice has no deed, no address, no standing, and it does not lose them because you argue well; it never had them. Whatever your hand does in the next minute is His to work in you and never a test you can fail; the freedom does not hang on the meter of cloth. But the mountain here is small enough to say in a breath, and Jesus said the faith that speaks to a mountain does not have to be large, only spoken. So speak. Not to the voice. To the counter, to the fear, and to Him.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, hand flat on the cloth or on the table. Your standing to say them was not earned by walking out sooner; Christ is in you and you have been moved into His kingdom, and the authority to name whose voice you answer was given to you with the deed. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes His voice known inside you, not the force of your own. Speak first to the voice, then to the fear that has been standing behind it, then to the Shepherd. What He does with the reflex, and how quickly your hand learns, is His to decide, in His own way and His own time, and the deed was signed before you ever reached the counter.
- Voice that still gives me orders, you have no standing at this counter, and you are not the one I answer. It is written that I was bought with a price and am not to be anybody's servant, and the Spirit who says come is not the one saying not for you.
- Fear that wanting is not for me, you have been mistaken for a commandment, and there is no such commandment written anywhere. Scripture says the sheep do not follow the voice of a stranger, and in the name of Jesus I am not following it out of the shop today; His voice is the one my feet know.
- Lord, Yours is the voice I answer now, and I know it the way a lamb knows one call in a hundred. I am asking for a meter of the blue with my own mouth, and I thank You that Your Spirit says come exactly where the old voice said not for you.
