The Voice That Rides in the Passenger Seat

Three hours south on Route 9 and there is nobody in the truck.

Wendell has the window cracked an inch because the heater runs hot, and a paper cup of coffee in the holder that went cold somewhere around the county line, and two hundred and forty miles of two-lane behind him. He has driven this road since he was nineteen. He knows where it dips at the creek bridge and where the seal coat gets loose past the quarry, and he has never in his life needed a map for any of it.

He is not alone though, and that is the thing.

It started around the second hour, the way it always does, quiet and reasonable. It said the shop will not hold. It said you have seen men try this and you know how it goes. It said by the first frost you will be back doing what you were doing, and everybody who watched you go will watch you come back, and the worst part is nobody will even say anything about it.

He turned the radio up. Not because he wanted a song. He turned it up the way a man turns a fan on to cover a sound in the wall.

And here is what you would notice if you were sitting where I am sitting, in the passenger seat that nobody is in. That voice has no face on it. If you pulled him over at the next wide spot and asked him whose voice that is, he could not tell you. It is not a memory of anybody in particular. It does not come with a name, or a room, or a year. It arrives already talking, in the second person, in a tone of settled expertise, as though it had been given the file on him a long time ago and had simply been asked to read out the finding.

It talks like it has standing. That is the whole trick of it. It does not shout. It states.

And it is specific, that is the other thing. It never says anything vague. It names the month. It names the fall. It has an opinion about the exact week the money gets tight, and it knows which of his cousins will hear about it first, and when it gets to that part he presses the gas a little without deciding to.

You are the one driving.

Maybe not on Route 9 and maybe not in a truck. But you know the tone I am describing, because it does not have to shout at you either. It gives you the finding. It tells you where this ends. It has your whole biography and it never gets a single date wrong, and you have been turning the radio up over it for so long that you have stopped even asking who is talking.

So let us stop at the wide spot up here and turn the engine off. There is something I want to read to you.

Standing is a courtroom word

In a court, standing is the right to be heard. A man cannot walk in off the sidewalk, take the floor and give the finding on your life, however confident he sounds, because standing has to be granted and it has to come from somewhere. Everybody in that room can say who granted theirs.

Isaiah is speaking to people who had been talked about for a generation, and he does not tell them to argue better. He tells them what the arrangement is.

no weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD and their vindication from me, declares the LORD.Isaiah 54:17

Read the second half slowly, because that is where the weight sits. Their vindication is from Him. Not from their own comeback, not from their track record, not from a good fall that finally proves the voice wrong. From Him. The refuting a man does is not him inventing an argument at seventy miles an hour. It is him reading out a finding that was already entered by somebody with the authority to enter it.

This is not a comeback I thought up for you. Isaiah 54:17 is where it is recorded, and the Holy Spirit is the one who reads a verdict out loud in a moving truck: you have a vindication that comes from God rather than from the fall, and it is already settled, and it does not go up and down with the shop.

Now hear what that does to the commentary. A tongue that rises in judgment is exactly what has been riding with you, and Scripture does not treat it as a prophecy. It treats it as a tongue. It has an opinion and it has a tone and it has no seat, and the reason it sounds like a finding is that it borrowed the grammar of one.

And notice, God does not tell the man to identify the voice first. There is no instruction anywhere in that verse to trace it, name it, or figure out whose it was. That is a mercy, because you cannot source it, and you have been quietly ashamed about that for years, as though a man ought to be able to say where his own commentary came from. You were never required to name it in order to be free of its authority, and His word says so plainly here, and the Spirit of God is not waiting on an investigation before He speaks over you.

The finding that is actually on the record

So if that voice is not the verdict, there is a real one, and a man ought to know what it says.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.Romans 8:1

Look at the word now. Not eventually, and not on review. Now, at the mile marker going by outside, in the cab, with the coffee cold. The finding was entered at the cross, it was entered by the Judge Himself, and it was entered before you did one single thing to deserve either the charge or the clearing.

Nothing in His word is running quieter behind that sentence, and His Spirit is not carrying a second opinion in His back pocket: you are cleared in the only court that ever had jurisdiction over you, and the clearing is written down in Romans 8, and it does not lose its force at the speed you are traveling.

Here is where men like us get caught, so let me say it plainly. We keep waiting for the voice to stop before we believe the verdict. That is backward, and it is also unnecessary. The clerk downstairs may keep reading the old charge sheet all night. The case is still dismissed. A voice with no standing can talk for thirty years and never once change a finding, because talking is not the same act as judging, and the two things happen in different rooms.

So when it starts up around the second hour, you are not required to win an argument with it. You are not even required to answer it in kind. What you have is better and quieter than that: a written finding, and the Spirit of God at liberty to say it back to you as often as it takes. This is yours right where you sit, because the word has already ruled and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that ruling into a cab with the window cracked an inch.

One more thing before we go on, and I would rather say it and not be needed. If that voice has stopped being an opinion about the fall and started being about you, if it has been telling you the world would run smoother without you in it, tell one human being today and let them stay near you. Reach the crisis line where you live if there is any danger at all. A man who tells somebody is not a man who caved. He is a man who refused to be alone with a tongue that has no standing.
