His Voice NowRevelation 12:10

The Accuser Does Not Live Here

This message is for the man who has not spoken at a family gathering in nine years because a voice reminds him each time that he is the one who ruined the party, who needs to stop letting an accuser take the chair at a table where he has been made welcome

The lights are the kind that come out of a box every year with half the bulbs dead, and somebody has strung them from the fig tree to the corner of the roof anyway, and underneath them the table runs the whole length of the courtyard because it is really three tables pretending to be one.

Forty people. Maybe more. Two conversations going at every seat, a domino game at the far end where the shouting is, and a small girl asleep across two chairs with a paper napkin laid over her face to keep the light off. Somebody's phone is playing music nobody chose. Bowls keep coming out of the kitchen and going back in empty.

Mateo is in the middle of the table, and he has said nothing.

Not nothing exactly. He said thank you when the plate came round. He laughed at the domino shouting, and the laugh was real, not performed. He got up and carried the empty bowls in and stayed a while at the sink, because a sink is a good place to be useful in. But in three hours he has not told a story, not offered an opinion, not started one single sentence with the word I. He is a man who used to be the loudest one at this table.

Nine years ago there was an evening in this courtyard when everything went wrong, and it went wrong loudly, and Mateo was at the center of it. It got sorted out. It got forgiven, properly, the way things do get forgiven in a family that loves each other and knows how. Nobody under those lights tonight is holding one minute of it against him. His cousin across the table would be astonished to hear it brought up.

But every time this courtyard fills and the lights go on, something in him leans over and says, in a voice he could not tell you the origin of, quietly and very reasonably: careful now. You are the one who ruined a night like this once. Everybody is enjoying themselves. Do not be the reason it turns.

So he passes the bowls. He is warm, he is present, he is loved. He is a beloved man having a lovely evening with his mouth shut, nine years running, and there is not one person in that courtyard who put the rule on him.

You are the one in the middle of the table.

I do not know what the night was. I am not going to ask and I am not going to reconstruct it for you, because a man who has already been forgiven does not need his case reopened by a stranger with a message. What I want to look at is not the night. It is the voice. There is a voice in your gatherings that hands you a rule every single time, and it speaks with real authority, and it has been at that table longer than most of the guests.

I want to tell you who it is, where it is standing, and what has already happened to it.

The voice has a name, and the name is a job title

Let me name the weight before I touch it, because this one never gets said out loud in a courtyard full of people.

It is not the night nine years ago. That is finished, and the people who were there have moved on so completely that they do not know there is anything to move on from. It is the running commentary since. It is being loved at full volume by everybody at the table and still living under a standing order that arrives with the first string of lights: not you, not tonight, keep it small. And under that, quieter, the sentence a man would rather die than say into a room full of people who love him. I am the one who spoils things. They have all been very kind about it.

Here is the court record, and it is not an opinion. It is entered in Revelation 12, and the Spirit who inspired it is reading it out into the courtyard where you are sitting. You are in a room where the case against you has already collapsed, and the voice still talking is talking from outside the building.

And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God."Revelation 12:10

Look at what that word accuser actually is. It is not a mood. It is not the sound of your own conscience being tender. It is a job title, and it is a legal one, and it belongs to somebody with a trade. Scripture shows him doing it: standing in the court in Job 1, standing at the right hand of a high priest in filthy clothes in Zechariah 3 to bring the charge, and the answer he gets there is not a debate about whether the clothes are dirty. The clothes are dirty. The answer is that the Lord rebukes him, and then somebody takes the filthy garments off the man and puts clean ones on him while he is standing there.

And the news in Revelation 12 is one word long. Thrown down. Not silenced. Not argued into agreement. Removed from where he was standing, out of the position from which a charge could be entered at all. You have a case that no longer has a prosecutor in the room, and I am not the one who says so; that is God's own record in Revelation 12, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a courtroom sentence and sets it down under a string of lights in a courtyard.

Standing is not volume

Here is the thing that keeps good men quiet at long tables for nine years, and it is worth saying slowly.

A prosecutor who has been thrown out of the case can still stand in the street outside the courthouse and read the charge sheet at the top of his voice, and it sounds exactly the same as it did inside. Same words. Same paperwork. Same tone of grave reasonableness. Nothing about the sound of it tells you it has lost its standing. That is the entire trick, and it is the only one he has left.

So notice what you have been doing with the volume. You have been treating loudness as jurisdiction. You have been hearing certainty and assuming authority, and they are not the same thing and never have been. The question was never how sure the voice sounds. The question is who is speaking and whether the court is still listening, and Revelation 12 answers both.

And notice something else, because this is where the relief actually lives. That voice is often accurate about the facts and still has no right to a hearing. It does not need to lie. It only needs to read out something true and let you conclude that the truth of it means the case is open. It is not open. Paul says it plain: there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). Now. Not pending. The word he chooses is a courtroom word, and he puts the word now in front of it. This is yours in the settled tense, at that table, this evening, and Romans 8 is the ground under it, with the same Spirit who put those words in Paul's mouth putting them into your evening.

One plain thing before we go on, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the voice at your table has stopped being about a party nine years ago and has started telling you that people would be better off without you in the room at all, tell one human being today, and if there is any danger in it for you, reach the crisis line where you live and let a real person stay with you tonight. Walking toward help is an ordinary thing a free man does.

The breakthrough

Something is meant to happen here, and it is not that the voice goes quiet.

It may go quiet. That is His business and He does it in His own way. But you are not waiting on silence, because silence was never the thing that changed your standing at the table, and if you wait for the voice to stop before you speak you have made a prosecutor with no jurisdiction into the clerk of the court.

What changes tonight is who you answer. You were made welcome at that table by a decision that was taken without you and cannot be reopened, and it is written in Revelation 12 that the accuser was thrown down, with the Holy Spirit standing in that courtyard to say that the thrown down do not get to run the seating plan.

Whether your mouth opens tonight or at the next gathering is between you and Him, and He is not impatient with a man who has been careful for nine years. But whether you are welcome there was never the open question. Look down the table. Every face on it settled that a long time ago.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in the kitchen or in the courtyard. The standing to say them is not confidence you had to manufacture tonight: it is Christ's, and it belongs to you in Christ, the way an ambassador speaks with an authority that was handed to him. You are covered by a verdict that was reached before you ever felt it, and it is written in Revelation 12, and the Spirit who was in heaven when that voice was heard makes a court record into something a man can say with his own voice. What God does with the voice itself, and how soon a courtyard feels easy again, is His to decide; He answers in His own way and in His timing and I am putting no clock on Him. But whether the accuser has any standing at your table is not in question, and you may say so out loud.

  1. Nine years of silence at that table, you are not humility and you were never a kindness to anybody, and I am spending my voice tonight. Revelation 12 says the accuser of the brothers has been thrown down, and a prosecutor with no standing does not get to draw up the seating plan in my family.
  2. Verdict that I am the man who ruins a room, you are finished, because you were never handed down by the Judge. Scripture says the accuser accuses day and night and has already lost his place before God, and the Holy Spirit is the one reading me the real one, so in the name of Jesus you have no right to stay in my mouth.
  3. Lord, You threw the accuser down and You did not consult me about it, and tonight I am opening my mouth in a courtyard full of people who love me. Your word says the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God have come, and Your Spirit tells me which voice at that table is Yours. I am not the quiet one in the middle of the table, I am the one telling the story.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
