The man at the front has said it twice now, and the second time he said it slower.
If you have been carrying something, he says, anything at all, do not sit there holding it on your own. Come down to the front and let somebody stand with you and pray with you. That is what tonight is for. Nobody is counting, and nobody is watching the clock.
And the hall gets up. Not all at once. A chair scrapes near the middle and a young man in work boots goes down the aisle with his hands pushed into his pockets. Then two women together, one holding the other's sleeve the whole way. Then most of a row along the side, the way a row goes once the first person in it moves. The keyboard player is holding one low chord and letting it ring, and the room fills with the sound of people standing up, and by the time the second verse comes around the aisle is full from halfway back and the front of the hall is a crowd of bowed heads and steadying hands.
Marion is in the back row with her coat across her knees.
She has not moved. Her bag is on the seat beside her where she put it an hour ago. She is not being difficult and she is not sulking; if you sat down next to her she would tell you it is wonderful, and she would mean it, because she has been watching the front of that hall with her whole heart in her face. She has been carrying something for eleven years. It has a weight and a shape and she could tell you the exact week it arrived.
And when the man said everyone carrying something, she heard it the way you hear a fire alarm in another building. Real. Loud. Somebody's.
Because that call, she is quite sure, was for the ones already on their way down. For the young man in work boots, who is young enough for something to still be done about it. For the two women, who are the sort of people who go forward. For anybody whose trouble is a proper trouble with a name on it and a date attached. Hers is old and quiet and she has managed it for eleven years without troubling anyone, and she would hate to take a minister's time from a person who really needs it.
So she keeps the coat across her knees and she stays where she is, being glad for everybody else. And that gladness is real. It is one of the truest things in the room. It is also the lid she keeps on the other thing, which is the settled belief that a word spoken over a whole hall is a word spoken over other people.
You are the one in the back row.
I am not going to guess what you are carrying, because it is not mine to guess and you have carried it long enough without a stranger naming it for you. What I have come to the back of the hall to tell you is smaller than your trouble and it changes everything about tonight. The call was not aimed at the aisle. It went out over the whole room, at the volume of a whole room, and you were sitting inside the word everyone when it was said.
Every one of them, and the doors did not ask who had been singing
There is a night in the book of Acts I want you standing inside, because it settles this in one sentence and it settles it with arithmetic.
Two men are in the inner prison at Philippi with their feet in the stocks and their backs opened up from a beating. It is midnight. They are singing, which is its own sermon, and the other prisoners are listening because there is nothing else in that dark to listen to. And then the ground moves.
And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.Acts 16:26
Read the two words that are doing the work. All the doors. Every one's bands.
Not the singers' door. Not the door of the two men whose theology was correct and whose worship was audible. All of them. There were men in that prison who had sung nothing, who had never heard of Paul, who had spent the evening lying in the dark going over their own case for the hundredth time. Their doors went too. Their chains came off in the same second as the chains of the men at the front. Scripture does not record one exemption, one held-back cell, one prisoner the earthquake stepped around because his trouble was too old or too quiet to bother the God who sent it.
The word all sits in that sentence on purpose, and the same Spirit who shook those foundations is at work in the room where this finds you. You are inside the call that was made tonight, and you have been inside it from the moment it was spoken.
And notice what Paul does next. He does not run. He shouts into the dark to tell the jailer that nobody has gone, and the sentence he uses is we are all here. He counts the whole prison, and the count comes out complete. You have a place inside a word that was said to the whole room, because it is written in Acts 16 that not one door was left shut, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying that old count into a back row on an ordinary evening.
The arithmetic of the back row
Now let me say the quiet thing out loud, because it has never once been said back to you and it has been running your evenings.
It goes like this. A general invitation is for general people. My trouble is not an emergency. It has no diagnosis and no date and no drama; it is simply the shape of my life now, and there are people at the front with real weight on them, and if I went down there I would be taking a turn that belongs to somebody else. Underneath that sits the oldest one of all, the one you would be embarrassed to say aloud: everybody else appears to have been handed something I was never handed. A nudge. A certainty. A word with their own name in it. And until mine arrives, going forward would be presuming.
Hear me, and hear that this is not my verdict. It is God's, recorded in Acts 16, where the shaking did not consult a list, and the Spirit who inspired that page is the one saying it to you now: it is already settled that the call covered you, and it was settled while you were still working out whether you counted.
There is no line at the front of grace where the supply runs low before it reaches the back. There is no minister's time being stolen, because the One doing the work in that hall is not rationed and never has been. Whatever you concluded about yourself eleven years ago, on whatever afternoon it was, His word carries no footnote for people at the back, and His Spirit is not running a second and stricter policy behind it. You were included the night the call was made, and you were included in the only Name that has ever done the including.
And plainly, before I go on, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If what you are carrying has gone somewhere dark, tell one human being today, out loud, and if you are in any danger at all reach the crisis line where you live and let a real voice stay with you. Walking toward help is one of the ordinary things a free person does, and it is not the opposite of faith. It is what having somewhere to walk looks like.
So come back to the hall, because I have not walked to the back row to leave you sitting in it.
Nothing is missing. The call has been made, and it was made at the volume of a whole room. The word says all the doors, and every one of the bands, and that record has stood for two thousand years with no exception written into it. The only thing between you and the aisle is a conclusion you reached about yourself a long time ago in a quiet moment, and a conclusion is not a lock.
You were named in a word that named everybody, and it is written in Acts 16 rather than felt in your chest, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence spoken over a room and lays it on one woman in the back row. He is not waiting for your certainty to catch up with Him. He never was.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the back row or the kitchen or wherever this found you. The standing to say them is not something you worked up tonight; it belongs to you because you represent the King who made the announcement, and every line stands on Scripture with the Holy Spirit carrying it rather than on the steadiness of your voice. What He does in you as you speak, and how quickly your feet learn that aisle, is His to decide, in His own way, and I am putting no clock on Him. Whether the call had room in it for you is not in question, and you may say so out loud.
- Coat across my knees, you are not a reason and you never were, and I am standing up with you over my arm. It is written in Acts 16 that all the doors were opened and every one of the bands was loosed, and all is a word with room in it for me.
- Verdict that a call made to everybody means everybody else, you have no right to stay in me. Scripture records that every chain in that prison came off in the same second, and the Holy Spirit is the one telling me that every one has always had a back row inside it.
- Lord, You said it over the whole room and You meant the back of it, and in the name of Jesus I am on my feet. I thank You, because You opened all the doors without taking a list first, and I am walking the aisle You opened for everyone.
