Rules LiftedMatthew 6:8

Until You Feel Something

This message is for the woman who cannot end a prayer until she feels something and has turned prayer into a shift she works, who needs the rule that measures prayer by sensation lifted off her without being told her hunger for God was wrong

Eleven thirty at night, and she is still on the carpet with her elbows on the sofa cushion.

She got down there at ten fifty. Forty minutes. The house is quiet in the particular way a house goes quiet after everybody else has given up on the evening, and the radiator has clicked off, and her knees have gone past aching into that numb hot feeling, and she has said everything she came to say twice.

She is not going to get up. That is not a decision she makes at eleven thirty; it was made a long time before tonight, by a rule she has never once written down and could not tell you the author of. The rule says you do not get up until something moves. Until the chest goes tight and then loose. Until the tears come, or the words change, or a heat starts somewhere under the ribs, or the room feels different than it did. Something. Anything. Until then, whatever has happened on this carpet has not happened yet.

So she starts again. She works through the list a third time, slower, pressing on the words, and she can hear herself doing it and she hates the sound. She tries singing under her breath. She tries silence. She tries saying the same name over and over, because sometimes that does it. Eleven twenty becomes eleven thirty. At eleven forty she gets up because she has work in the morning, and she carries the small, exact, familiar weight of a job left half done into her bedroom and puts it on the pillow beside her.

Here is what makes it hard to see. It looks like devotion, and part of it is. She loves Him. That is not in question and it never was; a woman does not spend forty minutes on a carpet at eleven at night for a God she is indifferent about. Her hunger is real and it is the best thing in the room.

But the rule is not her hunger. The rule is a gauge that got bolted onto her hunger somewhere along the way, with a needle on it, and now every night reads either enough or not enough. She could not tell you who fitted it. She has never heard a sermon that said it. Nobody in her life has ever said the words to her out loud. It simply grew, the way rules with no authors grow, and it has been running her evenings ever since.

You are the one on the carpet.

I am not going to tell you your hunger is the problem, because it is not and I am not in the business of taking good things off people. I am going to go looking for the author of that rule, and we are going to find that it does not have one, and then I am going to read you what Jesus actually said about the measure of a prayer.

A rule with nobody's name at the bottom

Jesus taught on prayer to people who had inherited a measure, and He named the measure before He replaced it. He described those who thought the answer lay in the sheer quantity of the speaking, and then He said this.

Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.Matthew 6:8

Sit down in the middle of that sentence and stay a moment, because it takes the floor out from under the gauge.

Before ye ask him. Not after forty minutes. Not once the pressure has built. The Father in that verse is already fully informed at the moment your knees hit the carpet, and He was fully informed at ten fifty, and He was fully informed at four o'clock that afternoon while you were doing something else entirely. Prayer, in the mouth of Jesus, is not a process by which God is brought up to date, and it is not a process by which He is moved from unwilling to willing. It is a child talking to a Father who was already listening and already knew.

Hear where this comes from, and hear that it is not my policy on prayer: it is written in Matthew 6, and the Holy Spirit is the one making a two-thousand-year-old correction land on a carpet at eleven thirty at night. You are heard from the first word, and the hearing is not a thing you build up to.

And look at what He is not saying, because I will not have you walking out of here with a new rule. He is not against long prayer. He prayed all night on a mountain. He is not against tears, or heat, or the room feeling different, and neither am I; I have spent most of my life in rooms like that and I would not trade one of them. He is against a measure. He is against a needle on a dial that tells a hungry woman whether her Father was in the room, when His word already told her.

He knew before the sentence left your tongue

Now let me name the thing under the rule, because until it is said out loud it keeps working in the dark.

It is not really about feeling. It is about evidence. Somewhere in you is the quiet conviction that a prayer you could not feel was a prayer that did not land, and that the flat nights are wasted nights, and, worse than that, that a woman who kneels for forty minutes and feels nothing has learned something about where she stands with God. That is the sentence you would be embarrassed to say out loud, and it is the one I have come for.

Look at what David says God does with words before they are even words.

For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.Psalm 139:4

Not a word. Before it is out. Psalm 139 puts God upstream of your speech entirely, and His Spirit is the one who carries that verse into a silent room where nothing seems to be happening: you have been heard on every flat night you filed as wasted, and the record of it does not sit in your chest.

The gauge measures the one thing in the room that God never once made the point. Your feelings are real and they are His gift and they are welcome, and they are also weather: they move with sleep and with the time of the month and with what happened at work and with whether the radiator was on. It is already settled that He hears you, and it was settled by a Father who knew before you asked, and the Spirit is not running a second and stricter register behind His word.

The reward is in the room, not in the ribs

There is one more sentence and it is the one that lifts the rule right off.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.Matthew 6:6

Secret. Unseen. And notice how thoroughly unseen: unseen by the people who might be impressed, and unseen by you as well. The Father is described as the One who sees in secret precisely because the transaction is not visible from where the person praying is standing. He does not say your Father will show you a receipt before you get up. He says He sees, and He is the One who sees, and that is where the whole thing rests.

Whatever your knees told you tonight, His word says the Father sees in secret, and the same Spirit who inspired Matthew 6 is in the room with you: you were fully attended to on the nights that felt like nothing at all.

And plainly, before we go on, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the nights on that carpet have started to feel like something you owe rather than something you love, and if it has gone somewhere dark, tell one human being today, and if there is any danger at all reach the crisis line where you live and let a real voice stay with you. Getting help is not the opposite of prayer. It is what a free woman does with a weight she was never meant to carry alone.

The breakthrough

So come back to the carpet, because I have not knelt down beside you to leave you there at eleven forty.

There is no author on the rule. There is a signature on the other thing: Jesus said your Father knows what you need before you ask, and Matthew 6 has been sitting there in your own house the whole time with the answer printed in it. The gauge is not a stricter obedience. It is an invention, and inventions can be put down without anything falling over.

And your hunger stays. That is the part I want you sure of. Nothing is being taken from you here except a needle on a dial. You have a Father who has been listening since before the first word, and it is written in Matthew 6 rather than left for you to prove, and the Holy Spirit is the one who ends a prayer as gently as He starts one. You may get up whenever you are done. Done is a thing you are allowed to be.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on the carpet or standing in the kitchen with the pen still in your hand. The standing to say them is not something tonight's forty minutes bought; it belongs to you because you represent the King who told you plainly what the Father already knows, and every line rests on Scripture with the Holy Spirit carrying it. What He does in your evenings from here, and what He gives or does not give you to feel in them, is His to decide, in His own way, and I am putting no clock on Him. Whether He hears you is not in question.

  1. Sofa at eleven thirty, you are not an altar and you were never the measure, and I am getting up off my knees whole. Matthew 6 says my Father knows what I need before I ask Him, and a Father who already knows is not waiting to be moved by the length of my kneeling.
  2. Get out of my evenings, gauge that says a prayer I could not feel was a prayer that did not land. Psalm 139 says He knows my words before they are on my tongue, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been carrying every flat night I filed as wasted.
  3. God, You see in secret and You have seen every night on that carpet, and in the name of Jesus I put the rule down and keep the hunger. I thank You, because You counted me in before my hand ever went up, and I am praying tonight as a daughter and not as a night shift.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
