The screen lights up at twenty past ten and she is already standing.
Not startled. Standing. Her book has gone face down on the arm of the chair, both feet are flat on the rug, her right hand is halfway to the side table, and not one part of that was a decision she made. The lamp is on. The heat has clicked off for the night. Behind her the faucet is dripping into a dish she left to soak. The phone is face up on the side table throwing that particular white glow onto the ceiling, and the glow is what did it, because the glow arrives about a second before the name does.
Her stomach is gone. That is the only way she has ever been able to say it. Not butterflies. Gone, dropped straight down and out of her, and her hands have gone cold in the same instant, fingertips first, and there is a taste at the back of her teeth like a coin. Her heart is going at a rate that would interest a doctor, and she has not read a single word yet.
It is her sister. It is a photograph of a cake, badly lit, one candle leaning over, with a caption about her nephew turning nine.
Naomi sits back down. She types something warm with hands that will not settle for another six or seven minutes. She reads the same paragraph of her book four times over. A little before eleven she goes up, and lies in the dark, and the ceiling is fine and the house is fine, and her chest is still going, and she thinks the thing she thinks nearly every time. It is not that was frightening. It is something much worse than that. It is: it has been years.
That is the sentence that does the damage. Not the phone. The arithmetic. Because somewhere along the way she has quietly decided that a body still doing this after all this time is a report on her. Not a report on what happened to her. A report on her. That she is not really free, whatever she says on a Sunday morning with her hands up. That everybody else got handed a clean ending and she got handed a permanent alarm.
She has never told anybody any of that. What would she even say. A photograph of a cake got me.
You know the drop. I am not going to ask what taught your body to do it, and I am not going to tell you what it means about you, because the first is not mine to know and the second is not what you have been told it is. There is one thing I want in your hands before the next screen lights, and it is not a technique and it is not a promise about your stomach. It is that the drop was never a verdict, and that there is a line in Scripture written for a person whose news comes at night.
Fixed is a mooring word
Psalm 112 is a portrait rather than an instruction. It is God describing what a person who belongs to Him actually looks like from the inside, and it is worth reading slowly, because the seventh verse says something so specific that most of us have read straight past it for years.
He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.Psalm 112:7
Notice what it does not say. It does not say the tidings stop coming. It does not say the phone stays dark. The verse takes for granted that news arrives, at night, out of nowhere, at people who love God, and it does not apologize for that or explain it. What it says is that the heart is fixed.
Fixed is a mooring word. It is not a word about feelings and it is not a word about calm. A boat on a mooring in a hard wind still moves: it pitches, it slaps, it swings a full half circle around the buoy, and anybody watching from the harbor wall would call that boat unsettled. What it does not do is go out to sea. The chain is not measuring the weather. The chain is simply not letting go. You have a heart that was moored a long time before that screen lit up, and the mooring is not rated by how much the boat moved. Psalm 112 puts fixed and trusting in the same short breath, on the written page, and the Holy Spirit who set that line down is the one holding the chain taut at twenty past ten while your hands are cold.
And that is where I want to take the arithmetic out of your hands. It has been years is a true sentence about a calendar and a false sentence about you. You were released on a day that had nothing to do with your nervous system, and the release did not come with a clause about how fast your body would catch up. There is no small print under that promise. It is written in Psalm 112 without a footnote for people whose bodies are quick, and the Holy Spirit is not adding one quietly at the bottom.
Your body is faster than the news
Look at the order of things in that room, because the order is the whole mercy.
The glow hits the ceiling. The stomach goes. The hands go cold. Then, a second or two later, the reading happens, and the name arrives, and it is a cake with a candle in it. Your body moved before any information was available to move on. That is not unbelief. Unbelief is a considered position taken by a mind with the facts in front of it, and your stomach did not have the facts and did not take a position. It moved at the speed God built it to move at, in a body He made to keep you alive.
Look at how He handles a man in that condition, because it tells you what He is like. Elijah had just seen fire fall on a mountain and then ran a full day into the wilderness and asked to die under a broom tree. God's first move was not a correction and not a sermon. It was sleep, and then a touch, and then bread baked on hot stones and a jar of water, and then more sleep, and only much later a quiet voice on the mountain (1 Kings 19). Nobody told that man his body was a scandal. You were never asked to be a person whose stomach does not drop. That is not my leniency, it is God's own way of doing things, written down in 1 Kings 19 where anyone can read it, and the same Spirit who moved the prophet is the one who fed him first.
So hear the thing the arithmetic has been arguing against. What Christ settled about you is already settled, and a cold hand at twenty past ten does not reopen the file. Hear whose sentence that is: Romans 8:15 says you did not receive a spirit of bondage again to fear but the Spirit of adoption, and the Spirit named inside that very verse is the one saying daughter over you while your fingertips are still white.
One plain thing before we go on, because I would far rather say it than assume. If the nights have stopped being about a phone at all, if the dark has gone somewhere heavy and stayed there, tell one human being today, and if you are in any danger reach the crisis line where you live and let a real voice stay with you. And keep whatever care has already been put into your hands. Walking toward help is one of the ordinary things a free woman does, and there is nothing in it that undoes a single thing God has settled.
I am not going to promise you that the drop stops. That promise is not mine to make, and anybody who hands it to you has handed you one more thing to fail at, and I love you too much to do that.
Here is what is actually on the table, and it is better, because it does not depend on your stomach agreeing to anything. Peace here is not the absence of the drop. Peace is what the drop is tied to. This is yours tonight: a heart that is fixed, held by God, on a day when your hands are cold and the faucet is still dripping. Isaiah 26:3 says He keeps in perfect peace the mind that is stayed on Him, and the keeping in that sentence is His work and not your grip, and His Spirit is the one doing it.
Which means the flinch is not a report on your freedom, and it never was. It is a report on a body that once had to move fast and learned how, and the God who made that body is not embarrassed by it. You are free while your heart is going, and you were free at twenty past ten, and it is written in Psalm 112 that a heart like yours is fixed, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting for your pulse to agree before He says so.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you actually are: in the chair, in the dark upstairs, in the parking lot at work with the engine off. Say them as someone who represents the King and not as someone auditioning for calm. The standing to say them is yours because you are in Christ and the authority is His, not the steadiness of your hands. Every line stands on Scripture, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a written line into something a person can lie down on. What He does with the drop, and whether your body ever learns a different speed, is in His own way and His timing and I am putting no clock on Him. But whether you are free is not up for review tonight.
- Glow on the ceiling at twenty past ten, you are not a verdict and you never were, and I am not going to read you as one. Psalm 112 says a heart like mine is fixed, trusting in the Lord, and fixed was true of me before you lit up and it is true of me while my hands are still cold.
- The arithmetic that says my body is proof I never got free, you have no right to stay in a house God has already settled. It is written in Romans 8:15 that I did not receive a spirit of bondage again to fear, and the Holy Spirit named in that same line is the one who says daughter over me at twenty past ten.
- Lord, my heart is fixed in You and it was fixed before the screen lit, and in the name of Jesus I am putting the phone down and going up to sleep. You keep in perfect peace the mind that is stayed on You, and my cold hands are welcome to come up the stairs with me.
