Brave In FreedomIsaiah 42:16

The Day Is Yours and It Is Terrifying

This message is for the woman sitting on the edge of the bed at half past six on the first morning after eleven years of caring around the clock, with nothing at all written on a day that belongs to her, who needs courage for an open life that is less predictable than the hardest years were

She wakes at ten to six because that is when she wakes, and lies there for a while waiting for the sound that tells her what to do first.

It does not come. The house is doing that particular quiet a house does when nothing in it needs anything. The heating ticks. A blackbird starts up in the hedge and stops. Somewhere down the road a truck reverses and beeps eight times and drives off. Roz lies in the dark and listens to a morning that has absolutely nothing to say to her.

At half past six she gives up and sits on the edge of the bed with her feet on the carpet.

For eleven years this hour had a shape. Up. Kettle on. The pills in the plastic tray with the days of the week on it, and she could do that tray with her eyes shut and often did. Wash. Turn. The sheet that had to be got out from underneath without waking the whole street. Breakfast that took forty minutes because it took forty minutes. And by the time the light came up properly she had already done more than most people do by lunch, every day, for eleven years, including Christmas, including the week she had the flu, including the day of her own birthday when she forgot it entirely until the evening.

Her mother moved on Thursday. There is a room now with nurses in it around the clock, four miles away, with a wide window and a garden they take her out into, and it is right, and everybody agrees it is right, and Roz sat in the parking lot afterward with her hands on the wheel and could not work out what she was feeling because it was three things at once and none of them would hold still.

And now it is Tuesday, and it is half past six, and the day is hers.

Nothing on it. Not one thing. No tray, no sheet, no forty minutes. Just hours, in a row, all the way to dark, and every one of them hers to fill, and the whole thing is so open that it makes her feel sick, and here is the part she would be ashamed to say out loud to anybody who knows what those eleven years cost: she misses it. Not the exhaustion. She would not have another day of that. But she misses knowing. She misses being the one who was needed at three in the morning. She misses a day that told her what it was for before her feet hit the floor.

You are sitting on the edge of that bed. Maybe it was not eleven years and maybe it was not a mother, but you know the specific fear of an open morning, and you know the shame of missing a hard thing, and I want to say the shame part first and get it out of the way. Missing the shape is not disloyalty. It is what a body does when it has carried something for a long time and the weight comes off suddenly: it keeps bracing for a while. Nobody is grading you for that. And there is a sentence in Isaiah written to exactly the person sitting where you are sitting.

He addressed it to people who cannot see the road

Most promises in Scripture are addressed to a condition. This one is addressed to a condition so specific that when you find yourself in it you can put your own name in the envelope.

And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.Isaiah 42:16

Read who it is for. Not the people who can see the road. Not the ones with the year mapped out and the diary filled in. The blind, by a way they knew not, in paths they have not known. Not knowing the road is not the thing that disqualifies you from the promise. Not knowing the road is the address on the front of it. You have a promise that was written specifically for a person who cannot see the next hour, and it was written in Isaiah 42 long before this Tuesday, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an ancient sentence and puts it in your hands at half past six.

And look at the last clause, because that is the one that does the work at this hour. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them. God knows what an unfamiliar road does to a person. He does not say the road will be familiar. He says He does not leave. You were not led out of eleven years and then left standing in a corridor. That is God's own wording in Isaiah 42, not my encouragement, and the same Spirit who inspired the promise is not running a quieter policy behind it.

Manna was a day at a time on purpose

Here is the thing about an open day that nobody warns you about: it is not the emptiness that frightens you. It is the fact that you cannot stockpile it. Eleven years had a shape you could hold in advance. A free day arrives one at a time and refuses to be arranged in a stack.

God built a whole nation's life that way once, deliberately. Bread came in the morning, on the ground, enough for the day, and the ones who tried to keep tomorrow's portion overnight found it had spoiled by morning (Exodus 16). That was not God being difficult. It was God building a life where the supply and the person arrived at the same time, every morning, so that nobody had to carry the future in a jar. This is yours for today only, and today only is not a smaller life, it is the size God actually hands things out in. It is written in Exodus 16 where anybody can read it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns an old wilderness arrangement into an ordinary Tuesday in a quiet house.

Which is why the fear is not proof of anything. Unpredictable does not mean unaccompanied. The years you have just come out of were predictable because they were narrow, and narrow is not the same as safe, and open is not the same as alone. Right now, as you read this, you are on a road you cannot see and you are not on it by yourself. Psalm 139 says even in the dark His hand leads and His right hand holds, and the Holy Spirit is the one making a psalm about the dark into something you can put a foot down on.

One plain thing here, and I would rather say it and be unnecessary. Coming off eleven years is a very quiet kind of tired and a very quiet kind of alone. If the mornings have gone somewhere heavy and stayed there, tell one human being today, out loud, and if you are in any danger at all reach the crisis line where you live and let a real voice stay with you. Keep whatever care has already been put into your hands, and let somebody carry a bit of this. Reaching for people is one of the ordinary things a free woman does with a free day.

The breakthrough

I am not going to tell you what to do with today. That would be a new tray with new pills in it, and you did not come out of eleven years to be handed another schedule by a stranger.

Here is what is actually happening on the edge of that bed. You are not being asked to be brave about an empty day. You are being introduced to a God who leads people down roads they have never seen, and who said so in advance, in writing, so that nobody in your position would have to guess whether it applies to them. You are already on the way, and the way is already known to Him, and it is written in Isaiah 42 that He makes the crooked places straight in front of the ones who cannot see them, and the Holy Spirit is the one walking it with you at the speed you are actually going.

And the missing is allowed to come with you. You do not have to leave your love for those eleven years at the door in order to walk out of them. You have a Guide who does not require you to be finished feeling things before He starts leading, and Isaiah 42 says He does not forsake them, and the Spirit who wrote not forsake is not standing at the end of the hall tapping His watch.

Declare this over yourself

Say these on the step, or at the counter with the kettle going, or in the car at the traffic light. Say them as one who represents the King, because the standing to say them is yours in Christ and rests on His authority and not on how well you are handling the mornings. Every line stands on Scripture, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it into a quiet house. What He puts on the empty hours, and how fast the strangeness wears off, is in His own way and His timing, and I am putting no clock on Him. But whether you are out here alone is not in question, and you may say so out loud.

  1. Empty morning with nothing written on it, you are not a warning about the rest of my life and you are not a test I am failing at half past six. Isaiah 42 says He leads people by a way they did not know, so I am walking a road I cannot see with a God who can.
  2. The belief that I only counted while somebody needed me at three in the morning, you have no right to stay in a woman God has never once valued by the hour. Scripture says He does not forsake the ones He is leading, and the Holy Spirit did not carry me out of eleven years to leave me in a corridor with nothing to be.
  3. Lord, You knew this Tuesday before I did and You have not handed me an empty day, You have handed me an open one. In the name of Jesus I am taking the hours as they come, one morning at a time, the way You have always given bread.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
