Free Among ThemIsaiah 26:3

Peace Among the Worriers

This message is for the woman who has been given peace and sits weekly among friends who run on worry, who needs to stay free among them without announcing her calm or being handed the job of fixing theirs

They are on to next winter by the time the plates go back.

It starts the way it always starts, which is with something small and real. Somebody's boiler. From the boiler it is one step to what boilers cost now, and from there to the winter, and from the winter to the news, and by the time the teapot goes round for the second time the table has arrived at a place it arrives at most weeks: a full and detailed forecast of a year that has not happened, assembled by four people who love each other very much.

It is not gossip. Nobody here is unkind. These are good women, and one of them sat up all night in a hospital corridor with another one of them in February, and every person at this table would come at two in the morning if you called. This is simply how they hold their lives. You put every possible disaster on the table first, in company, and then you have looked at it, and looking at it in company is how they keep it from looking at them alone.

Ruth is at the end of the table with her hands round a warm cup, and Ruth is not braced.

That is all. She is not smug and she is not superior and she is not somewhere else in her head; she is listening, properly, and she loves them, and she is simply not braced. Something happened in the last couple of years that she could not put in a sentence if she tried, and the bracing went, and it has not come back.

She said it out loud once. Just once, months ago, a light and hopeful sort of sentence about not worrying so much these days. And the table went quiet for about a second and a half. Not hostile. Something worse than hostile: careful. And somebody said, well, you have not had a year like mine, and everybody laughed and it moved on, and Ruth learned in that second and a half that her peace had landed on the table as a comment on theirs.

So now she says nothing. And she sits there every week with the thing she has been given, holding it slightly under the table, and there are two pulls on her and she feels both of them by about the third cup.

The first pull is to join in. It would be so easy. She has her own forecast ready; everyone does. And it would put her back in the middle of them, and the middle of them is warm.

The second pull is to announce it. To say the true and helpful thing, and to hear it land wrong again.

You are at that table.

Maybe yours is a break room, a family kitchen at Christmas, a group of old friends, a car full of people on the way somewhere. You are free of something they are not free of, and you did not free yourself, and you love them, and you cannot work out how to be in the room. So you have gone quiet, and you have started wondering whether the quiet is dishonest.

It is not dishonest. But there is a third thing you can do at that table, and it is better than both of the pulls, and it is not something you have to manufacture.

The two ways this table gets lost

Let me take the two pulls seriously, because both of them are made of something decent.

Joining in is made of love. It is the wish not to be apart from people you belong to, and it dresses up as loyalty, and the price is quietly enormous: an hour of rehearsing a year that has not happened does something to a person's chest, and it is a strange kind of faithfulness that costs a woman the very thing she was given. Announcing it is made of generosity. It is the wish to hand over what has been given. And it lands, nearly always, as a verdict on the person listening, because peace spoken across a table to somebody who is bracing does not sound like an offer. It sounds like a grade.

Neither of those is a sin, and I am not scolding either. But there is a third way to be at that table, and Scripture describes it in a sentence that puts the whole burden in the right place.

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.Isaiah 26:3

Read who is doing the work in that verse. You keep him. The peace is not a temperament she achieved and it is not a technique she is maintaining; it is a keeping, done by God, on a mind that is leaning His way. That is why announcing it goes wrong. It is not hers to hand across a table, and it never was, and the moment she offers it as though it were her own accomplishment it stops sounding like good news.

Take this from where it is written and not from me: Isaiah 26 puts the keeping in God's hands, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the keeping in a room where everybody else is forecasting. You are kept at that table, in the middle of the second teapot, and the keeping does not thin out because the conversation turned.

And nothing about that keeping requires their agreement. This is where a great many gentle people get stuck: they feel that peace held privately among worried friends is somehow a lie, as though a person owed the room a disclosure. You have a peace that does not need a vote, and it is written that God keeps the mind that is stayed on Him, and His Spirit is not waiting for the table to ratify it first.

What the peace is doing while she sits there

There is a word in Philippians that changes the picture entirely.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:7

Guard is a soldier's word. Paul writes it to a town that had a garrison in it, and everybody reading it knew exactly what he meant: a sentry posted, a watch kept on a gate. So peace, in that sentence, is not a mood in her chest. It is something posted around her, doing a job, while she passes the milk and listens to the story about the boiler.

That is why she does not have to leave, and it is why she does not have to argue. A garrison does not need the town to agree with it in order to stand at the gate. She can sit at that table for two more hours with the forecast going round, and be genuinely, actually free, and never say one word about it.

That is God's own arrangement, recorded in Philippians 4, and the same Spirit who inspired it is standing that watch tonight. This is yours in the middle of a worried room: a peace that surpasses understanding, which means it does not need to be understood by anybody present, including you.

And here is the thing I most want to hand you, because it is the thing that quietly exhausts people like you. You are not the one responsible for their year. You did not settle your own peace and you cannot settle theirs, and Christ has not put the four of them on your account. It is written that He keeps the mind stayed on Him, and His Spirit does the keeping, and He is entirely capable of doing for them what nobody managed to do for you by explaining it. Love them, pour the tea, and put down the job you were never given.

One plain paragraph, because I would rather say it and not be needed. If the worry at that table has stopped staying at the table, if the forecasting has got inside and the year ahead frightens you in a way you cannot put down, tell one human being today, plainly. If there is any danger at all, reach the crisis line where you live; in the United States that is a call or a text to 988. Saying it out loud to somebody real is one of the ordinary things a free person does.

The breakthrough

So here is the table, and the second teapot, and the year that has not happened being described in detail by people you love.

Nobody is being sent out of that room and nobody is being sent into a sermon. Both of those would be a relief in their way, because both would end the tension. What is handed over instead is smaller and much stronger: the staying itself, quietly, with a garrison around it that was posted by Someone else. That is not a compromise. It is what freedom looks like when it is sitting next to people it loves.

I am not speaking my own idea over you. Isaiah 26 says He keeps, and Philippians 4 says the peace of God guards, and His Spirit is the one carrying both of those into a room where the forecast is going round for the third time. This is yours at that table tonight: kept, guarded, unannounced, and not on duty for anybody else's year.

Some weeks you will catch it from them anyway and go home braced. That is not a collapse and it is not the end of anything. The garrison is not withdrawn because the town had a bad night, and the keeping was never yours to maintain in the first place.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud on the way home, or in the kitchen afterward with the light on. The standing to speak them is not something your calm earned; it is yours because you are in Christ, and the authority in them is His and not mine. Every line rests on Scripture, and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it, which is why a voice that has said nothing all evening is voice enough now. What He does at that table, and whether anybody there ever asks you a question about it, is His to decide, in His own way and in His timing, and I am putting no clock on Him. But whether you are kept is not in question, and you may say so out loud.

  1. Table where next year is rehearsed each week, you are not my forecast, and you were not the one who settled my peace. It is written in Isaiah 26 that God keeps in perfect peace the mind that is stayed on Him, and my mind was stayed there long before I sat down with you.
  2. Suspicion that peace makes me a stranger among my own friends, you have no place at that bench, and you were never the price of belonging. Scripture says the peace of God guards the heart and the mind in Christ Jesus, and in the name of Jesus I am staying in that room, loving them, and carrying no year but the one in front of me.
  3. Lord, You keep me in perfect peace and You posted the guard Yourself, and I did not arrange one hour of it. Your word says You keep the mind that is stayed on You, and Your Spirit is the one keeping it while the teapot goes round, and I am passing the plate.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
